Every week, an alarming five million disposable vapes are discarded in the UK, marking a fourfold increase from the previous year. According to a study by Material Focus, a British non-profit organization dedicated to increasing recycling rates, this figure is not only concerning but also represents a significant waste of valuable resources.

The Scale of the Disposable Vapes Recycling Problem

Material Focus recently calculated that UK adults purchase approximately 30 million vapes monthly, including various types such as vape pens, vape pods, vape mods, and e-cigarette vapes. This estimation is based on data from a Yougov survey of 5,156 people. The study also revealed a concerning statistic: only 17% of disposable vape users are disposing of their waste vapes properly in recycling bins.

Valuable Materials and Environmental Impact

Disposable vapes contain copper wires and lithium batteries, which are valuable materials. Material Focus estimates that the batteries from all the discarded disposable vapes annually could power 5,000 electric cars. By law, every place that sells vapes should accept used disposable vapes. However, the necessary facilities come at a cost, and many places do not offer them.

The Vape Industry’s Response

The potential annual cost of recycling all these vapes is estimated at £200 million, a burden that would fall on vape manufacturers, importers, or retailers. Scott Butler, executive director of Material Focus, emphasizes the need for easier recycling facilities, stating, “There’s far more vapes thrown on the floor, and in public bins and kitchen bins than are being recycled. Currently, recycling facilities are a long way from what we need. It needs to be as easy to recycle as it is to buy them.”

Fire Hazards and Waste Disposal Problems

Mixing vapes with other household waste can cause fires in garbage trucks and disposal facilities. Lithium batteries, including those in disposable vapes, cause fires approximately once a day, according to waste disposal company Veolia. This poses a significant risk to waste handlers and the environment.

Efforts to Improve Recycling Rates

VAPLAY, a popular UK disposable vape brand, has committed to improving recycling rates and is enhancing the recyclability of their products by setting up thousands of drop-off points in retail stores. Additionally, more vape manufacturers are investing in research and development for recycling solutions for disposable vapes.

Industry and Government Responses about Vape Recycling

John Dunne, director general of the UK Vaping Industry Association, acknowledges the rapid growth of the industry and the challenges it presents. Many independent vaping shops have set up recycling facilities to recycle disposable vape pens. The UK government has expressed concern about the environmental impacts of disposable vapes and is preparing a response to its call for evidence on vaping. The Scottish government is considering a ban on disposable vapes, and parliaments in England and Wales have called for a ban, partly due to waste disposal problems.
